Urban Nerds catch up with the UK’s latest dance production bad man, Redlight, ahead of his set at the Urban Nerds warehouse rave on Saturday 19th June here!
Yes Redlight, you good?
Yeah I’m good, just recovering from a big weekend!!!!
This is your first Nerds rave since NYE, how was that?
Yeah really good, played early as I had another gig that night, but thought it was a really good vibe…
Why ‘Redlight’? Does the name have any connection to Amsterdam’s glorious back streets?
No Redlight means when the red light comes on the beats are loud!!!!
In another life you were DJ Clipz. What sparked the transition from D&B to this new sound?
For me I had done what I wanted to do with that genre of music and was ready for the switch up into something new, I’ve always made other beats and it was time 2 start again and push my new music out there, also the UK music scene is at a very exciting time at the moment with a lot of different styles and genres coming together.
The sound…you call it junglestep, right?
No I’ve never called it that haha.
Shit. No junglestep.
Yeah I’ve done a couple of beats that sound like slower old skool jungle bits, but I wouldn’t say that’s all I’m doing right now, I’ve got a new track with Ms Dynamite called What You talking About forthcoming on Chase & Status’ label, just finished working on some beats for Mz Bratt and Roses Gabor, and also been remixing artists from Kelly Rowland, Tempa T to Magnetic Man, and the main thing for me is to make each beat I make different from the last and not the same style or tempo.
Jenna G and Jammer feature on your tunes. What drew you to that pair?
I’ve only used Jenna G and Jammer on One Track called Pick Up The Phone which came out late last year on the Lobster Boy E.P. I’ve known Jenna for years and worked with her on a project a few years back and new she’s capable of trying new things and experiments with different styles, so thought she we be good to try a Redlight track. She came down to my studio and we made the track in a couple of days, then thought it would be big to get Jammer on the last verse as I had just finished working on a track for his album called Get It In.
In person Jenna’s pretty chilled and Jammer’s mad as a hatter. Got any joke moments to share from your time in the studio with them?
Sorry what happens in the studio stays in the studio. LOL (check my autobiography soon to be published).
You’re reppin’ Bristol. Why do you think the scene’s so healthy there? Bristol seems to churn out producers, artists and music gold like it’s nothing!
Yeah Briz is a good place for music and parties; it’s a small city with big musical aspirations and heritage. Certain artists from there have always pushed their own style and developed vibes and swam against the tide, and that is how I’ve been brought up to think about making and listening to music.
Redlight has exploded over the past year. Got any highlights?
Hearing Stupid getting played on Jonathon Ross on Friday was pretty funny.
EP on the way soon?
I released an EP last year, with Feel So Good ft. Dread Zaniah & Redskin (check it here). I also released Stupid on Digital Soundboy ft Roses Gabor a couple of months ago (check the video here). And, I’m just about to release What You Talking About ft Ms Dynamite and MDMA on MTA records. We are also just about to film a video for it too…
What bangers can we expect to hear at Nerds this month?
All the new shit, bare brand new dubplate specials really looking forward to playing may even make a special for it ; )
The film is a creative re-edit of one of the most famous Star Wars movie scenes – the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine – and features David Beckham, Franz Beckenbauer, Snoop Dogg, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel, Daft Punk and DJ Neil Armstrong, not to mention Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3P0 and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Check it out it’s really well done and jokes too!
